O my goodness what a week.........
So here is the story of Ryan's accident
Thursday night May 7, Ryan got a phone call from his Mom saying that she had to have surgery the next morning due to kidney trouble. A surgery for Mom Hanson is a huge deal she is not in great health anyway and any kind of big or small is a huge deal and a great risk. Ryan and I felt it was important for him to go down to Logan and be there for her. Orrin his younger brother from Boise and his wife were also going to be there. Anyway off Ryan went all went well with her surgery and Ryan and I talked about whether he was going to go to Bear Lake to make sure she was okay for the night or if he was going to come home. I had to work that night so I arranged for my Mother to take the kids to her house for the night and I was going to meet her in Blackfoot and trade them. Ryan never called me to tell me what is definate plans were so I stuck with mine with the attititude that he could pick them up that night on his way through or we could go down the next afternoon and pick them up.
Well the kids and I got all ready for them to have their sleep over with Grandma Harris. They were so sooooo excited. We went to Blackfoot and met my mom and 5:10 in the Ridleys parking lot. I got out got the kids settled all in the mean time my phone was sitting on the seat of my car. We said our goodbyes and I got in the car. My Mom sat in her parking spot for a minuet and I actually looked at my phone to get the time but had missed two calls form a number I didn't know. I usually would wait to check the message until later but for some reason I checked it right then. It was a lady that was telling me that there was a truck overturned in Emigration canyon and the Gentleman inside gave her my number. I knew it was Ryan.......Mom and I were both leaving the parking lot by then and I just started honking. She got out I parked my car I told her about the message. She calmed me down I called into work and I jumped in her car. Mac had come with her so I got in the back seat between the two kids. The lady said she thought he would be taken to Preston hospital so I remembered Ryan saying that he though Orrin and Sara were going to stay in Logan before going back to Boise so I called him first #1 they were the closest and Orrin is a Paramedic in Ada county and he knows alot about these kinds of things, anyway they were at the interchange to either go to Preston or head to Boise and they detored and went to Preston. In the mean time the lady called me againa nd said she thought he might be going to Bear Lake beings she saw Bear Lake responders. So I called Ryan's Moms house to tell them what was going on when his Older brother Mike happened to be there. I told him what was happening and he told me he would call his sis-in-law that is a nurse at Bear Lake Memorial. He called me back and told me that they were expecting a victim from a one-car-rollover in emigation canyon . By then Mom and I were at McCammon. So we just kept driving. We got there and Ryan was in the ER all of his family was around him and I walked in. I remember looking at him not knowing what to expect. He broke down and I just kissed his cheek. Held his hand. I remeber Orrin coming and putting his arm around me and I lost it. Orrin and I have a great relationship as a Brother and Sister in-law. We get along really well and understand each other. Orrin can tell what I am thinking before I really know. I was so grateful to have him there. I also had his older brother Mike that is amazing in situations like this. He is the oldest brother and Ryan is extremely close to him also. It was such a comfort having those two big Hanson boys there it seemed almost like they were Ryan and my protection that night.
Anyway we found out while in Bear Lake that Ryan had a broken neck. He broke it in two spots. By this time it was almost 9:30 we talked about transporting him to EIRMC that night but I decided his pain was now under control and what would EIRMC do tonight anyway. I wanted everyone to be able to sleep including Ryan. We got his stableized and into a room by about 10:00. They gave us a double room that night it was so nice to have a bed although I didn't sleep much. Kristy (my Mike's sis-in-law) stayed way beyond her shift to make sure Ryan got settled she was amazing to him. After he got into his room I asked him if he would like a blessing I remeber telling him he needed one, Mike was still there and Ryan agreed to have one. Mike got his brother in law Ryan to come over and they gave him a blessing. I remeber at that moment I knew that he was going to be okay.
The next morning Ryan was transported to EIRMC via ambulance. Orrin rode with him while Sara and I followed in her car. About 5 pm Ryan was Admitted to EIRMC for observation. He started to stand up and walk alittle and started to look tons better. Sweet Orrin sent me home that night so I could get a goodnights rest and he stayed with Ryan. Sara and I came home and got back to the hospital bright and early the next day. We brought Ryan home that evening. Sara and Orrin stayed until the next day. I think Orrin would have stayed forever if he could have! They were such big help with the kids and helping make phone calls and taking me here and there.
So here we stand. Dr. Cach says he will be in the neck brace for 12 weeks. We are still waiting on whether or not he will need surgery. Dr. Redd says he wished Ryan would have doen a better job at breaking his wrist because it could have been fixed but he just broke a chunck of bone out and the ligiment damage is far worse than the break. It will take time to heal. As for Ryan's career as a capenter it is unclear.
We can only take this day by day. We are blessed to have the wonderful family we do for the help his brothers and sister-inlaws were that night. For the wonderful Messerly famliy that dropped everything to help. For my parents to take the children all week and there continued help they help us so much they will never know how much we love them. So many blessings will come out of this I know they will. I am so thankful to have my husband here with me today.
So here are a few pics taken just the other day Ryan was able to hold Miss Addyson and Rock her to sleep for the 1st time since the accident. I know he was hurting while this little girl sat on his lap but I don't think any amount of pain would have stopped him from holding her that night. She needed him and he needed her!
